This Week’s Curl Fix

Your hair mask isn’t giving you the results you expect?

After shampooing, don’t apply your mask to dripping-wet hair. Gently squeeze out the excess water, then blot — never rub — with a microfibre towel. Your hair should be thoroughly damp, not saturated. Removing that extra water reduces dilution and helps the formula spread and coat the hair fibre more evenly, so the conditioning ingredients can work where they’re needed.

Master the mask technique

Five guides your curls will thank you for.

01🫧
Your Wash Day Order, Explained

A good wash day is less about owning ten products and more about using the right ones in the right order.

The order that works

  1. Pre-detangle: Work in sections and loosen knots gently from ends to roots.
  2. Cleanse the scalp: Shampoo belongs on your scalp. Let the rinse clean your lengths.
  3. Condition: Apply from mid-lengths to ends, detangle, then rinse.
  4. Mask when needed: Swap it in after shampoo, usually once a week.
  5. Leave-in on damp hair: This is your moisture base.
  6. Style and seal: Add cream if needed, then jelly, gel or mousse for hold.
KURLD tip: If your roots go flat fast, keep rich products below ear level.

The common mistake

Layering heavy cream, gel and oil just because TikTok said so. Fine curls often need fewer layers; dense coils can usually handle more.

How to Use a Hair Mask Like a Pro

A mask works best when the hair is damp rather than saturated. Too much surface water can dilute the formula and reduce how evenly it coats the hair fibre.

Do this instead

  1. Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
  2. Gently squeeze out excess water, then blot with a microfibre towel. Do not rub. Hair should be damp, not dripping.
  3. Divide into 4–6 sections.
  4. Apply the mask through mid-lengths and ends, then smooth each section.
  5. Leave it for the time on the label. More time is not always more results.
  6. Rinse well, finishing slightly cool if you like extra shine.
Looksmaxxing for curls: Consistent, correct masking beats one overloaded “miracle” session every month.

Moisture or protein?

Choose moisture when hair feels rough and thirsty. Consider protein when it feels overly soft, limp or breaks easily. Balance matters.

03💧
Hair Porosity, Made Simple

Porosity describes how easily your hair takes in and holds onto water. It can help explain why a product feels perfect for your friend and chaotic on you.

Low porosity

Water beads up, products sit on top and drying takes ages. Try lighter layers, warm water during conditioning and avoid product overload.

Medium porosity

Hair absorbs moisture and holds styles fairly well. Keep a balanced routine and adjust with the seasons.

High porosity

Hair gets wet quickly, dries quickly and may frizz or feel rough. Layer moisture, use richer stylers and protect damaged areas.

Reality check: The viral “float test” is unreliable because oils and product buildup affect the result. Watch how your hair behaves instead.
04✨
Gel, Jelly or Mousse?

They all create definition, but the finish is different. Choose based on the vibe you want and how much hold your curls need.

Mousse

Light, airy volume and quick refreshes. Great for waves, fine curls or anyone who hates heavy product.

Jelly

Juicy definition with flexible hold. A sweet spot for curls that want shape without the helmet feeling.

Gel

Maximum hold, humidity defence and longer-lasting definition. Scrunch out the cast only when hair is fully dry.

Combo move: Use a small amount of leave-in, then your styler. Too many creamy layers can cancel the hold you paid for.

The Curl Rescue Plan

Heat, bleach and tight styles can leave curls dull, fragile and confused. Recovery is a routine, not a single product.

Your four-week reset

  • Cleanse gently: Remove buildup so treatments can reach the hair.
  • Alternate care: Use moisture regularly and targeted protein only when your hair needs strength.
  • Reduce friction: Detangle patiently, dry with microfibre and sleep on satin.
  • Pause high heat: Diffuse on lower settings with heat protection.
  • Trim split ends: Products can smooth them temporarily but cannot fuse them forever.
Track the comeback: Take one photo every wash day in the same light. Small progress becomes obvious.

If hair keeps snapping or your scalp is sore, itchy or shedding unusually, speak with a qualified professional.
